Kokanee Salmon Ice Fishing

Most types of salmon will migrate to the sea to spawn. Others will also migrate after hatching to a sea from a freshwater basin. However, there are some types of salmon that do not migrate to the sea, and these types are landlocked. A landlocked salmon is one that does not have any inclination to go out to the sea to grow. One of the most popular types of salmon like this is that of kokanee salmon, and it is especially popular to go ice fishing for them.

Kokanee salmon ice fishing is popular because of the tender meat that comes from this type of salmon. Whenever people who live near a lake go fishing they will especially look for kokanee salmon because of the strong meat quality that this type of salmon has.

Kokanee salmon ice fishing is also popular due to the ease of access for getting this type of salmon. Because it is landlocked a kokanee salmon can be easily found. This is different from other salmon that can be difficult to find during the spawning season.

Larger areas that may be more isolated are among the best places to go kokanee salmon ice fishing. Most parts of the United States and Canada that are far from larger seas will be great for kokanee salmon ice fishing. Alaska has the most of these places.

Kokanee salmon, like other kinds of landlocked salmon, will generally be found at the lower depths of a lake. Because the surface of the water is frozen during the winter season it will be easier to find this type of salmon when it is easier to go to the central part of a lake so that the deepest regions can be reached. This is what makes kokanee salmon ice fishing more popular than searching for kokanee salmon at other times of the year.

Alaska and many northern parts of Canada are great places for kokanee salmon ice fishing. There are other parts that are lower south that are good for kokanee salmon ice fishing too. Lake Tahoe in Nevada is one of the most popular places for kokanee salmon ice fishing. Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s deepest freshwater lakes, and with this there will be more kokanee salmon to find. The size of Lake Tahoe also allows for more breeding space for landlocked fish.

The Great Lakes around Michigan and Ontario aren’t as popular for kokanee salmon ice fishing, and there are many places where it is banned. Crater Lake and Guelph Lake have banned kokanee salmon ice fishing.

Kokanee salmon ice fishing can also take place in New York’s lakes. There are strong regulations for it though, so it is best to check New York laws for information on kokanee salmon ice fishing for more details.
